The Friends of River Narmada
The Friends of River Narmada (also known as Narmada Bachao Andolan) is a social movement based in India that aims to protect the Narmada River and its ecosystem from environmental degradation caused by large-scale dams and other infrastructure projects. The movement was started in 1985 by activist Medha Patkar and has since gained widespread support from environmentalists, human rights activists, and communities living in the Narmada River basin.
The Friends of River Narmada has been instrumental in bringing attention to the negative impacts of large dams on local communities and the environment. The movement has advocated for alternative and sustainable development models that prioritize the needs of local communities and the preservation of the Narmada River and its ecosystem.
The Friends of River Narmada has organized various protests, rallies, and demonstrations to raise awareness about the issue and demand action from the government and other stakeholders. The movement has also filed several legal cases against government agencies and private companies involved in the construction of large dams and other infrastructure projects on the Narmada River.
